Vision
A world where collectives find harmony in their unique as well as shared context with the world.Mission
Facilitate experiences for individuals in a collectives to find harmony within and across collectivesTheory of Change (ToC)
'Collective as a unit of change'A lot of work has been done on individual transformation, and the onus of transformation of society falls on the individual to bring that change. While there is a lot of merit in that, our understanding is that individual's actions are driven in context of the various collectives they are part of. Therefore we believe in collective as a unit of change.
Our work on collective transformation builds over the work of our elders. We inherit the worldview that
- Action takes place in context of collective
- All individuals are part of multiple collectives (family, workgroup, religious belief etc)
- Collectives are part of larger ecosystems (Nation, domain of work, religion etc)
- All collectives are interconnected via individual being part of other collectives and/or interdependent ecosystems (i.e. There are no exclusive collectives)
- Influence of these interconnected collectives on individual and individual's experience of these influences is unique.
- Broad themes like feeling loved, fighting for survival, feeling inadequate etc can categorize that unique experiences
- These experience influence individual's worldview, belief system, aspirations etc forming the context for all actions
Intention is to transform collective to facilitate experience of feeling loved, showing up our authentic self, feeling adequate, space for healing etc as per their cultural context. This feeling of safety and security enables individuals to be present, show compassion and empathy towards others. In contrast to feeling of competition, inadequacy, urgency to chase target which acts as psychological stressor triggering individual's primitive brain which is only capable of fight, flight or freeze. Therefore leading to behaviours like fighting over one's idea or belief system without understanding other views, sense of urgency of action without fully understanding the problem, sense of superiority over others due to race, gender, position etc without appreciating interdependence of everyone.
Journey so far
In April 2020, a team of 6 got together to redream a function of Youth Alliance - Leadership Development Programs. We offered it as a service to organizations doing great work in remote geographies. We worked with the teams to further their leadership capacity, build community and improve collective effectiveness.
From 2017-2020, we got the opportunity to work with the teams of organisations like Manzil (Delhi), Shiksharth (Sukma, Chhattisgarh), Vana Foundation (Dehradun, Uttarakhand), Diksha Foundation (Bihar), i-Saksham (Bihar) and Gurujal (Gurugram, Haryana).
Last 13 months, a collective got formed with 6 people - inquiry deep into the nuances of the human experience with a question - 'What would enable collective transformation?' We practiced our way into this vast area learning to hold the creative tension between individuals and collective.
The whole idea evolved into four concrete offerings for collectives and organisations across contexts. We are excited for the unfolding journey.
People Behind TMW
Shashank
I have reverence for nature and the spirit that oervades all. Cultivating spaces that enables us to witness each others' humanness gives me joy. I have been grateful for the 9 years at Youth Alliance, that have brought me to notice the intimate dimensions of crises we face today - patriarchy, colonialism, climate change, spiritual disconnection, et. al. Doing household work, cooking, walking and reading reconnects me to my essence. At The Mycelium Way, I am excited about nurturing the organisations that serve the next stage of human consciousness. I hail from the industrial town of Uttarakhand that has been at the conflict of ecology and economy - Rudrapur. I studied Commerce from Hindu College, Delhi University. I have been blessed to be part of several communities like Acumen, Bhoomi Network, Vikalp Sangam and Ecoversities.
Ishwarya
I am currently doing my best to cheat gravity and not let life pull me in an equilibrium state - I like to swing freely towards a state of being, doing, idealism, pragmatism and all things in between. I am still defining my identity and what it means. This journey is teaching me to stay fluid, curious and conserve love. I hail from Bombay, the city that never stops but my heart is stuck somewhere in Tirunelveli where I spend my day eating irrutu kadai halwa, reading books, taking afternoon naps. I continue to be part of extremely nourishing communities such as Dasra, GiveIndia, Amani Fellows and have been doing my best to be in service of these collectives. At Mycelium Way, I am excited to continue expanding my humanness practices to support the vision of many others on the same journey. Prior to this, for a short while, I was working with JP Morgan India Pvt Ltd after completing my degree in B.Com Banking and Insurance from the University of Mumbai and Company Secretary from Institute of Company Secretaries of India. Safe spaces that allow healing, Tamil literature, galouti kebabs, cooking meals for myself and a dense cheesecake bring me most joy right now.
Aditya
I am a high energy, deeply curious, sometimes introverted, tall and chubby person. You can easily spot me in crowded places. I love long conversations, I am one of those who have some opinion on everything under the sun. Although I am equally gullible, a good argument here and a great question there can shut me up to introspection (not without a fight though). I grew up in a town, Baraut (western UP). Apart from family other collectives which have heavily influenced me are DPS Sonepat, SGTB (DU), Youth Alliance, Acrostic (Poetry Society), BKPJM (Education College), Gandhi Fellowship, KEF (System transformation Organization) among many others. Some gifts which I have gathered over years allow me to listen empathetically, inquire into the mysteries of human nature, contribute to organization design/business strategy and design systems for individual development. Furthermore I am exploring best practices in OD, Indian philosophical roots and elements contributing to safe nurturing spaces.
Kadambari
I am a small-town girl at heart who likes to see Peepul leaves dance in the wind and butterflies flit from flower to flower - and while I am at it, I like to ponder upon bigger questions and revelations life opens up for me now and then. I am a student of Literature and pursued English Literature at Hindu College and Delhi University. My interest in characters and stories developed into my passion of understanding people and joining some of them as a co-conspirator and catalyst in their journeys as a coach and mentor. I believe in nurturing and safe spaces and want to spend my life doing just that - listening a lot, talking some and being a source of comfort and love for all who I meet on my way. I spent five precious years at Teach for India understanding leadership development and coaching through teaching.
Rachit Sharma
Rachit designs and facilitates immersive leadership programs with Youth Alliance. For the past five years, he has worked with diverse communities on various ideas like micro-funding, the democratization of journalism, and human-centric leadership. He was previously based in Mizoram and Chattisgarh where he was associated with tribal entrepreneurs and journalists. Rachit recognizes poetry and art as the greatest source of wisdom - open yet sculpted. He finds a strange attraction towards everything that's beautiful. He defines beauty as something that's - necessary, basic, and in harmony with everything else.
Aakanksha Jain
I live in constant amazement and curiosity for everything, out there and in here, just waiting to be discovered and made sense of. I am deeply inspired by creativity - I often find myself feeling curious about the life explorations that lead to the development of art. Discovering people as a sum of their experiences (and much more) brings me joy and fulfillment. I grew up practicing empathetic listening which emerged out of a deep love for getting lost in stories and making people feel heard. I dream of building spaces where people feel healed, cared for and completely free in their hearts, bodies and minds - therefore, wholly alive. My natural inclinations towards being a space holder and facilitator have been deeply nurtured by collectives like Anubhuti (Street Play Society), Young India Fellowship, Youth Alliance, and The Mycelium Way. At TMW, I feel excited to witness, engage and re-imagine the ways in which individuals show up in collectives and collectives show up in the world.
